What Is a Base64 Encoder and Decoder?

How Base64 Encoding Works
Base64 represents data using four characters for every complete group of three input bytes. Each Base64 character represents six bits, allowing 24 bits from three bytes to be represented as four groups of six bits.
Standard Base64
Standard Base64 uses uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, plus and slash characters. Equals signs may be used as padding at the end of the encoded value.
URL-Safe Base64
URL-safe Base64 replaces the plus character with a hyphen and the slash character with an underscore. This makes the encoded value more suitable for URLs and similar contexts.
UTF-8 and Unicode
When text contains Unicode characters, this tool represents the text as UTF-8 bytes before performing Base64 encoding. The decoder converts the resulting bytes back into text.
