Bytes Converter

Convert bytes between bits, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, petabytes and other common digital data units.

Fast, accurate data-size conversions for everyday digital storage calculations.

Convert Bytes and Data Units

Enter a value, select the source unit, and choose the unit you want to convert to.

Note: This converter uses binary data units, where 1 KB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MB = 1,024 KB, and so on. Bits and bytes are different units: 1 byte = 8 bits.

What Is a Byte?

A byte is a common unit of digital information. One byte consists of 8 bits and is frequently used to describe file sizes, storage capacity, and computer memory.

Larger data units are formed by multiplying bytes by powers of 1,024 when using binary-based calculations.

How to Use the Bytes Converter

  1. Enter the numerical value you want to convert.
  2. Select the original unit in the From field.
  3. Select the desired unit in the Convert To field.
  4. Click Convert.
  5. Review the converted value and its equivalent in bytes.

Bytes Conversion Table

Unit Equivalent in Bytes
1 Bit 0.125 bytes
1 Byte 1 byte
1 Kilobyte (KB) 1,024 bytes
1 Megabyte (MB) 1,048,576 bytes
1 Gigabyte (GB) 1,073,741,824 bytes
1 Terabyte (TB) 1,099,511,627,776 bytes
1 Petabyte (PB) 1,125,899,906,842,624 bytes
1 Exabyte (EB) 1,152,921,504,606,846,976 bytes

Common Bytes Conversions

Bytes to Kilobytes

To convert bytes to kilobytes using binary units, divide the number of bytes by 1,024.

1,024 bytes ÷ 1,024 = 1 KB

Bytes to Megabytes

To convert bytes to megabytes, divide the number of bytes by 1,048,576.

1,048,576 bytes ÷ 1,048,576 = 1 MB

Bytes to Gigabytes

To convert bytes to gigabytes, divide the number of bytes by 1,073,741,824.

1,073,741,824 bytes ÷ 1,073,741,824 = 1 GB

Bytes to Bits

Since one byte contains eight bits, multiply bytes by 8 to convert bytes to bits.

1 byte × 8 = 8 bits

Binary vs Decimal Data Units

Digital storage can be described using both binary and decimal conventions. This calculator uses the binary convention for KB, MB, GB, TB, PB, and EB, where each larger unit is 1,024 times the preceding unit.

Decimal storage units use powers of 1,000 instead. For example, a decimal kilobyte is 1,000 bytes and a decimal megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes.

When comparing storage-device specifications, operating-system displays, file sizes, or internet data measurements, check which convention is being used.

Why Bytes Are Important

Bytes are used throughout computing and digital technology. File sizes, memory, storage devices, databases, downloads, and many other digital resources can be measured in bytes or larger units derived from bytes.

Bits vs Bytes

A bit is the smallest basic unit of digital information and can represent a binary value. A byte consists of 8 bits.

8 bits = 1 byte

This distinction is especially important when comparing internet speeds, which are commonly expressed in bits per second, with file sizes, which are commonly expressed in bytes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bytes are in 1 KB?

Using the binary convention used by this calculator, 1 KB equals 1,024 bytes.

How many bytes are in 1 MB?

Using binary units, 1 MB equals 1,048,576 bytes, or 1,024 KB.

How many bytes are in 1 GB?

Using binary units, 1 GB equals 1,073,741,824 bytes.

How many bits are in a byte?

One byte contains 8 bits.

What is the difference between a bit and a byte?

A bit is a basic binary unit of information, while a byte consists of 8 bits. File sizes are commonly expressed in bytes, while network speeds are commonly expressed in bits per second.

Does this calculator use 1,000 or 1,024?

This calculator uses 1,024 for each binary data-unit step, such as KB to MB and MB to GB.

Can I convert gigabytes to bytes?

Yes. Select Gigabyte as the source unit and Byte as the destination unit, then enter the amount you want to convert.

Can I convert bytes to bits?

Yes. Select Byte as the source and Bit as the destination. The calculator uses the relationship of 1 byte = 8 bits.
