Business Days Calculator
Calculate the number of working days between two dates while excluding weekends and optional holidays.
Calculate Business Days
Choose your dates and decide whether to include or exclude the starting date.
What Is a Business Day?
A business day generally refers to a weekday on which normal business operations take place. For this calculator, Monday through Friday are treated as business days, while Saturday and Sunday are treated as weekends and excluded.
Public holidays can also be non-working days, but holidays vary by country, region, employer, and industry. This is why the calculator allows you to enter specific holiday dates manually.
How to Use the Business Days Calculator
- Choose the start date.
- Choose the end date.
- Select whether the start date should be included.
- Select whether the end date should be included.
- Enter any holidays that should be excluded, one date per line.
- Select Calculate Business Days.
- Review the calendar days, business days, weekend days, and excluded holidays.
How Business Days Are Calculated
The calculator checks each date within the selected range. A date is counted as a business day when it falls on Monday through Friday and is not listed as a holiday.
The calculation also respects your choices for including or excluding the start and end dates.
Business Days Example
Suppose you need to calculate working days between Monday and Friday and both dates are included. If there are no holidays in the range, the result is five business days.
Tuesday: Business day
Wednesday: Business day
Thursday: Business day
Friday: Business day
Total: 5 business days
Why Calculate Business Days?
- Estimate project durations.
- Calculate work schedules.
- Estimate processing times.
- Track business deadlines.
- Plan employee work periods.
- Estimate delivery or service timelines.
- Calculate working-day intervals for contracts and administrative tasks.
Business Days vs. Calendar Days
Calendar days include every day of the week, including weekends. Business days normally exclude weekends and may also exclude public holidays.
For example, a seven-calendar-day period can contain only five business days when it covers one complete Monday-to-Sunday week and there are no holidays.
Why Holidays Matter
Two date ranges with the same number of calendar days can have different numbers of working days if one range contains a public holiday and the other does not.
Because holiday schedules differ between locations and organizations, entering the relevant holidays manually provides more control over the calculation.
Start Date and End Date Options
Including the Start Date
If the start date is a weekday and you select the include-start option, it can be counted as part of the business-day range.
Excluding the Start Date
If the start date is excluded, the calculation begins with the following date.
Including the End Date
If the end date is a weekday and you select the include-end option, it can be counted as part of the range.
Excluding the End Date
If the end date is excluded, the calculation stops with the preceding date.
Business Day Calculation Tips
- Use the same date format for all manually entered holidays.
- Check whether your organization observes additional non-working days.
- Remember that business-day definitions can vary by industry and location.
- For official deadlines, confirm the applicable calendar and holiday rules.
- Use the calculator as a planning aid rather than a substitute for an organization's official working calendar.
