What Is a Business Markup?

Business markup is the amount added to the cost of a product or service to determine its selling price. It is commonly expressed as a percentage of the cost price.

For example, if a product costs $100 and a business applies a 30% markup, the markup is $30 and the selling price becomes $130.

How to Use the Business Markup Calculator

  1. Choose the calculation mode.
  2. Enter the cost price when required.
  3. Enter the markup percentage when required.
  4. Enter the selling price when calculating markup percentage or cost price.
  5. Select Calculate Markup.
  6. Review the cost, markup amount, markup percentage, and selling price.

Markup Formula

The standard markup percentage formula is:

Markup % = (Selling Price − Cost Price) ÷ Cost Price × 100

The markup amount is:

Markup Amount = Selling Price − Cost Price

When the markup percentage and cost are known, the selling price can be calculated as:

Selling Price = Cost Price × (1 + Markup % ÷ 100)

Business Markup Example

Suppose a business purchases a product for $80 and wants to apply a 25% markup.

Cost Price: $80

Markup: 25%

Markup Amount: $80 × 25% = $20

Selling Price: $80 + $20 = $100

The business would sell the product for $100 before considering taxes, discounts, fees, or other pricing adjustments.

Markup vs. Profit Margin

Markup and profit margin are related but they use different bases for calculation.

Markup: Profit compared with cost.

Profit Margin: Profit compared with selling price.

For example, if an item costs $100 and sells for $150, the profit is $50. The markup is 50%, while the profit margin is 33.33%.

Why Businesses Use Markup

  • Cover product acquisition costs.
  • Account for operating expenses.
  • Generate a desired amount of gross profit.
  • Create consistent pricing across products.
  • Estimate selling prices quickly.
  • Compare pricing strategies.

Factors to Consider Before Setting a Markup

Operating Costs

Rent, salaries, utilities, software, shipping, marketing, and other operating costs can affect the markup a business needs.

Market Competition

Businesses often need to consider competing prices when deciding how much markup customers may accept.

Demand

Products with different levels of demand may support different pricing strategies.

Taxes and Fees

Sales taxes, payment-processing fees, marketplace commissions, and other charges may affect the final price calculation.

Discounts

If regular discounts are expected, a business may need to account for them when establishing its initial selling price.

How to Calculate Markup Percentage

If you know the cost and selling price, subtract the cost from the selling price to find the markup amount. Then divide that amount by the cost and multiply by 100.

Cost: $120
Selling Price: $180
Markup Amount: $60
Markup %: $60 ÷ $120 × 100 = 50%

How to Calculate Selling Price From Markup

When you know the cost and desired markup percentage, multiply the cost by one plus the markup rate.

Cost: $200
Markup: 40%
Selling Price: $200 × 1.40 = $280

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between markup and margin?

Markup measures profit as a percentage of cost, while profit margin measures profit as a percentage of selling price.

How do I calculate a 30% markup?

Multiply the cost price by 1.30. For example, a $100 cost with a 30% markup results in a $130 selling price.

Can I calculate markup from cost and selling price?

Yes. Enter the cost and selling price and use the Markup % mode to calculate the markup percentage.

Can I calculate cost price from selling price and markup?

Yes. Use the Cost Price mode and enter the selling price and markup percentage.

Does markup include operating expenses?

Markup is normally calculated from product or service cost. A business may set its markup high enough to help cover operating expenses, but the exact pricing strategy varies.

Is a higher markup always better?

No. A higher markup may increase the selling price and could affect demand or competitiveness. Pricing should consider costs, market conditions, customer demand, and business goals.

Does this calculator include taxes?

No. The calculator focuses on cost, markup, and selling price. Taxes and additional fees should be considered separately when applicable.

Can I use this calculator for services?
