What Is an Aspect Ratio?

An aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between the width and height of a rectangular image, screen, video frame, graphic, or other visual area.

It is normally written as two numbers separated by a colon. For example, a 1920 × 1080 image has an aspect ratio of 16:9.

How to Calculate Aspect Ratio

To calculate an aspect ratio, divide the width and height by their greatest common divisor. The resulting whole numbers form the simplified aspect ratio.

Width = 1920 Height = 1080 Greatest Common Divisor = 120 1920 ÷ 120 = 16 1080 ÷ 120 = 9 Aspect Ratio = 16:9

The calculator performs this simplification automatically after you enter the two dimensions.

Common Aspect Ratios

16:9

A common widescreen ratio used for modern video, televisions, presentations, monitors, and many digital displays.

4:3

A traditional display and photography ratio that was widely used by older televisions and computer monitors.

1:1

A square format where the width and height are equal.

3:2

A common photographic aspect ratio used by many cameras.

21:9

An ultrawide format commonly associated with cinematic and ultrawide displays.

9:16

A vertical format commonly used for portrait-oriented digital content and mobile video.

Why Aspect Ratio Matters

Maintaining the correct aspect ratio helps prevent images and videos from appearing stretched, compressed, or distorted. Designers and content creators can use aspect ratios to resize visual content while preserving its original proportions.

  • Preserve image proportions when resizing.
  • Choose suitable dimensions for digital graphics.
  • Prepare images and videos for different display formats.
  • Avoid unwanted stretching or distortion.
  • Match designs to specific screen or content requirements.

Aspect Ratio Examples

1920 × 1080

The simplified aspect ratio is 16:9.

1280 × 720

The simplified aspect ratio is 16:9.

1080 × 1080

The simplified aspect ratio is 1:1.

Aspect Ratio vs Resolution

Aspect ratio and resolution describe different properties of an image or display. Resolution refers to the actual number of pixels, such as 1920 × 1080, while aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between those dimensions.

Different resolutions can have the same aspect ratio. For example, 1920 × 1080 and 1280 × 720 both have a 16:9 aspect ratio even though their pixel dimensions are different.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an aspect ratio?

An aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between the width and height of a rectangular image, video, display, or design.

How do I calculate an aspect ratio?

Divide both the width and height by their greatest common divisor. The resulting numbers form the simplified aspect ratio.

What is the aspect ratio of 1920 × 1080?

1920 × 1080 simplifies to an aspect ratio of 16:9.

What is the aspect ratio of a square image?

A square image has an aspect ratio of 1:1 because its width and height are equal.

Can different resolutions have the same aspect ratio?

Yes. Different pixel dimensions can have the same proportional relationship. For example, 1920 × 1080 and 1280 × 720 are both 16:9.

Does aspect ratio affect image quality?

Aspect ratio describes proportions rather than image quality. Resolution, pixel dimensions, compression, and other factors affect image quality.
