What Is an Aspect Ratio Converter?

An aspect ratio converter helps you calculate new dimensions for an image, video, graphic, or other rectangular design when you need to change its proportional format.

Instead of manually working out the dimensions, you can enter a known width or height and select a target aspect ratio. The converter calculates the corresponding dimension while preserving the selected proportion.

How to Use the Aspect Ratio Converter

  1. Enter the original width and height of your image or design.
  2. Select the target aspect ratio from the list.
  3. Choose whether the converter should calculate the new height from the width or the new width from the height.
  4. Click Convert Aspect Ratio.
  5. Use the resulting dimensions for your resized or redesigned asset.

How Aspect Ratio Conversion Works

An aspect ratio represents width divided by height. When one dimension is known, the other can be calculated using the target ratio.

Target Ratio = Ratio Width : Ratio Height New Height = New Width × Ratio Height ÷ Ratio Width New Width = New Height × Ratio Width ÷ Ratio Height

Example: 16:9 from a 1920 Pixel Width

Target Ratio = 16:9 Width = 1920 Height = 1920 × 9 ÷ 16 Height = 1080 Converted Dimensions = 1920 × 1080

The same method works with other standard or custom aspect ratios.

Common Aspect Ratios

16:9

A widely used widescreen ratio for video, monitors, presentations, and digital displays.

4:3

A traditional rectangular ratio used by older displays and some photographic formats.

1:1

A square format where width and height are equal.

3:2

A common photographic proportion used by many cameras.

21:9

An ultrawide format commonly associated with wide displays and cinematic content.

9:16

A vertical format commonly used for portrait-oriented digital content and mobile video.

Aspect Ratio Conversion Examples

1920 × 1080 to 1:1

Using the original width of 1920 pixels with a square target ratio produces 1920 × 1920 pixels when calculating height from width.

1920 × 1080 to 4:3

Keeping the width at 1920 pixels gives a target height of 1440 pixels for a 4:3 ratio.

1080 × 1080 to 16:9

Keeping the width at 1080 pixels gives a target height of 607.5 pixels for a 16:9 ratio.

When to Use an Aspect Ratio Converter

  • Preparing images for different display formats.
  • Creating video graphics with a specific frame proportion.
  • Resizing website graphics while maintaining consistent proportions.
  • Adapting designs from landscape to portrait formats.
  • Creating alternate versions of an existing design.
  • Checking the dimensions required for a specific aspect ratio.

Aspect Ratio vs Image Resolution

Aspect ratio and resolution are related but different. Resolution describes the actual pixel dimensions, such as 1920 × 1080. Aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between those dimensions, such as 16:9.

Multiple resolutions can have the same aspect ratio. For example, 1920 × 1080 and 1280 × 720 are different resolutions but both use a 16:9 proportion.

Common Aspect Ratio Conversion Mistakes

  • Confusing width with height when entering dimensions.
  • Reversing the target ratio, such as using 9:16 instead of 16:9.
  • Assuming that changing an aspect ratio does not change dimensions.
  • Rounding calculated dimensions too early.
  • Confusing aspect ratio with image resolution or file size.
  • Stretching an image instead of resizing or cropping it to fit the desired proportion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an aspect ratio converter do?

It calculates corresponding dimensions for a selected aspect ratio so that an image, video, or design can maintain the desired proportions.

How do I convert 16:9 to another aspect ratio?

Enter the original dimensions, select the desired target ratio, and choose the dimension you want to preserve. The converter calculates the other dimension automatically.

What dimensions are 16:9?

Common 16:9 dimensions include 1920 × 1080 and 1280 × 720. Any dimensions with the same 16:9 proportion also qualify.

Can I use a custom aspect ratio?

Yes. Select Custom Ratio and enter the width and height components of the target ratio.

Will converting an aspect ratio preserve the whole image?

The calculator only calculates proportional dimensions. If an existing image needs to fit a different ratio, you may need to crop or add space rather than stretch the image.

What is the difference between 16:9 and 9:16?

16:9 is a horizontal widescreen proportion, while 9:16 is the corresponding vertical proportion.
